since jesse has been writing a landscape painting course this summer for work, it has motivated us to go explore parts of wisconsin we've never seen before....or even heard of, and man, am i so glad we are out exploring...this state is amazing!! here we are at parfreys glen, about 40 miles from madison. a super easy hike in (which is necessary for quinn....she's still working on her endurance) and you get to the glen, where it's super lush, mossy, waterfalls, rocks to climb, the sun peaks in...it was something else!!

sharing some quieter moments
most of the time when we're visiting family in birchwood, there is so much going on, and so much fun to be had (i call it a circus show). the kids love it, and i do love seeing the deep connections my kids are making to a place that holds so many wonderful memories for me. but, every once in awhile, we have some quieter moments, like reading stories, or playing the piano, or arts and crafts, and those are as memorable as the wild adventures we share!
fishing on bucks lake
we went up to birchwood for the weekend, having a conversation before we left, stating "wouldn't it be nice to plan a serious fishing trip and catch enough fish that we can actually bring some back home". it doesn't take much to convince grandpapa to get all the gear ready for a little outing of this nature, and we even got grandmama to come with! the weather was pleasant, the lake was gorgeous, and the fish were biting like crazy....i mean, the kids would cast their pole and they would have a bite! it was so much fun. we were all busy doing something (i tried to contribute, but those night crawlers were so huge and slippery, i could not seem to grab one and then wrap it around a hook...eww! that was grandma's job. i did however find a technique to take the fish off once the kids caught them...i used a hand towel to hold them...ha ha!).
we were out on the lake for about an hour and caught tons of fish, bluegill, and bass. we had a fish fry that night, and then bagged up the rest. the boys were so jazzed by the fishing they went out the next day too, and caught more fish...some of the largest bluegills they have ever seen! i think this fishing trip may have ruined my kids knowledge of what fishing is actually like:) but we have a freezer full of fish...and that makes me so happy!!
